Puberty Workshops

  • For kids and family-adults to have a shared experience of talking about puberty that feels comfortable so it’s easier to keep the conversations going at home throughout the teen years.

  • We’ll begin all together as a community. We’ll say hello and Kai will set the tone and introduce the topics that’ll be covered.

Next, we’ll spend time in two small groups, one for adults and one for kids. We’ll answer questions like, “what was/is it like to go through puberty?” Then each group will hear about the other group’s discussion. This gives both kids and adults a chance to share their own perspectives and listen with empathy.

    We’ll take a short break.

Then, gather as a large group to discuss the changes of puberty. We’ll look at period products and use simple anatomy charts to understand what’s happening in the reproductive system.

Lastly, families will spend time just with each other to make plans to continue conversations at home.

  • We’ll talk about the physical, social, and emotional changes that happen during puberty.

Topics like relationships, periods, wet dreams, feelings, brain science, decision making, and more.

We won’t discuss every detail, and that’s on purpose. This workshop is intended to lay a foundation for more conversations at home.

All genders and cultures will be affirmed. Our discussions will be age-appropriate and family-adults are invited to share their own beliefs with their children.

  • This workshop is intended for kids ages 8-12 and their family-adults. Most often kids come with their parent(s).

  • Q: What if my child is under 8 or over 12 but I think this workshop would benefit us?
A: You’re welcome to bring them! However, if they’re much younger or older, feel free to reach out to Kai to talk through your family’s needs and whether this workshop is a good fit.

Q: Is it OK to bring another child without their parent/guardian?
A: Yes. Yet it’s best for kids to come with an adult they have an ongoing relationship with.

Q: Will adults be asked to talk about their personal lives?
A: No. Questions will be general (example: what was puberty like for you?) and you won’t be asked to disclose details.

Q: Will we talk about sex?
A: No. Discussions about sex and sexual health are not a part of the agenda. However, if questions about sex arise they will be answered with simple, honest messages and kids will be invited to talk to their family-adults more at home.

Q: How will gender and sexual orientation be discussed?
A: All genders and orientations will be affirmed! A range of gender identities will and orientations will be named and gender neutral terms will be used throughout.

Q: How will cultural and religious differences be discussed?
A: All cultures and religions will be affirmed. This workshop stems from the belief that there are many healthy ways for families to talk about puberty and sexuality!

Reviews

Kai’s puberty class is “the talk” I wish I had growing up. Kai was able to get my daughter and her 9-year-old friends to go from being giggly and shy to curious and inquisitive about all aspects of puberty. The unique thing about the class, and probably the part we all appreciated the most, was the comfortable conversation she facilitated between daughters and moms. Hearing the moms’ stories encouraged the girls to ask questions and be curious. Kai was prepared and extremely knowledgeable, and she communicated with the girls with ease and grace. She created a comfortable environment for everyone. The class covered the technicalities of puberty, but the way she taught it made it easy to understand. At the end of the class, we all wish we had more time to continue the conversation. Since the class, the girls have been able to ask each of us parents questions as they come up. This puberty class is priceless and is in my opinion, a must have for anyone who has a child who is about to go through puberty.
